METAPHYSICS OF RICKY GERVAIS AFTERLIFE: AN ARCHETYPICAL STUDY OF ITS CASTS AND CHARACTERS.

If we consider the possibility that there is only one consciousness in our world, and that consciousness is our own, then everything and everyone we perceive in our reality is a reflection of our own consciousness. In this sense, the projections of Tony represent aspects of his own consciousness that he is unaware of. The universe exists within us, and we exist within the universe. Therefore, the uncomfortable, embarrassing, and annoying characters that Tony encounters are manifestations of his own shadow, projected outward not only for our entertainment but also to help him confront and integrate the repressed aspects of himself.

In navigating the needs and desires of each of these aspects, Tony is forced to reconcile with the shadow parts of himself, which have been running amok and threatening his carefully constructed ego (Matt). This journey of self-discovery and integration is a crucial step towards healing and wholeness, reflected in the struggles and triumphs of the characters that Tony encounters.

The shadow (Tony), representing Matt’s repressed thoughts, desires, and fears, is fragmented into various characters, who symbolize different aspects of Matt’s hidden psyche:

– Lenny – The fool archetype of the bumbling, egoless aspect

– Psychiatrist – The Trickster archetype of the tricky, rule-breaking, unaware, and unprofessional aspect

– Postman Pat – The Lover archetype or the friendly, neurotic aspect

– Julian Kane – The death archetype or the lifeless, decaying, addicted aspect

– Brian Gittins – The weakling/monster archetype of weak, decrepit, humorous aspect

– James – The Child archetype or the fat, spoilt, talented aspect

– Ken Otley – The artist archetype of the eccentric, intrusive, artistic aspect

– Paul (magazine owner) – wealthy, powerful aspect (the King archetype)

This fragmentation of Matt’s shadow, embodied by Tony, reveals the diverse and conflicting aspects of his personality, which he struggles to confront and integrate.

Furthermore, the contra sexual archetype (Tony) suffers from underdevelopment due to its role in protecting the ego from the threatening and overwhelming contents of the unconscious. This archetype is accompanied by various anima representations, each carrying wounds and symbolizing different stages of development:

– Sandy, Lisa, and Emma represent the nurturing nature of the Eve anima, embodying hope and innocence.

– Roxy embodies the sexual nature of the Helen anima, symbolizing passion and desire.

– Rebecca and Kath represent the intelligent and knowledgeable Mary anima, personifying wisdom and insight.

– Anne represents the wise and spiritual nature of the Sophia anima, embodying spiritual growth and enlightenment.

These anima representations reveal the diverse aspects of the feminine qualities within Matt’s psyche, highlighting the complexity of his inner world.
